Who is the king of Football ?

Image
There have been arguments over the years about who deserves the title of "GOAT" (Greatest of All Time) in football. Possible responses could include iconic football players such as Pele, Maradona, Messi, and Ronaldo . To evaluate a football player, consider their goals, assists, trophies, and accolades. Metrics give insight into player abilities and team success, but comparing 90s football to current play may not be fair. There were no offside traps or VAR(Video Assistant referee) in the 90s, allowing players to score without misconduct. Currently, banned goals can result from even minor rule violations. PELE VS MARADONA : Who is better ? During their footballing careers, Pele scored over 700 goals and earned the nickname "the king" for his impressive accomplishments. Maradona, nicknamed "God's hand," scored 300 goals. Pele also won four more titles than Maradona, and together they won a total of 26 titles. PELE VS MARADONA :...

Barcelona is Messi's 'home', says club president Joan Laporta

Image
Barcelona president Joan Laporta says the club is Messi's "home" as they look to re-sign the forward this summer. The Argentine's contract at Paris St-Germain expires in June, with reports linking him to Saudi Arabia. But in an interview with Spanish broadcaster TV3, Laporta said Barcelona can compete with anyone for the 35-year-old's signature. "History backs us, the feelings are too strong, we have 400 million fans around the world too," he said. Messi left the Catalan giants two years ago after 21 years at the club but has struggled during his two seasons in France, with fans booing him after their 5-0 win over Ajaccio at the weekend. Laporta said there had been an "affectionate conversation" between the two and that he congratulated Messi on winning the World Cup in Qatar last year. "He is a Paris St-Germain player and we have to wait until the end of the season until it is over, and then we can talk more calmly about this," Lapor...

League Two: MK Dons sack head coach Mark Jackson after relegation

Image
MK Dons have sacked head coach Mark Jackson following the club's relegation to League Two. Jackson's reign lasted less than five months, having been appointed as Liam Manning's successor in December 2022. The 45-year-old left his position as Leeds United first-team coach to lead Dons' battle against relegation but registered just six wins in 25 games. His assistant Robbie Stockdale has also left the club, who were relegated following Sunday's 0-0 draw at Burton. Jackson, whose length of contract was not revealed when he joined the club, had said he wanted to remain as manager for next season immediately after that game. However, a short Dons statement on Tuesday confirmed his departure, thanking Jackson, Stockdale and analyst Aaron Dagger, who is also leaving the club, "for their efforts during their time at Stadium MK". Jackson had spent more than seven years at Leeds - as manager of the academy, under-18s and under-23s - before being promoted to the firs...

Lionel Messi suspended by Paris St-Germain for two weeks over unannounced Saudi Arabia trip

Image
Argentina captain Lionel Messi has been suspended by Paris St-Germain for two weeks after traveling to Saudi Arabia without the club's permission this week. The trip followed the French club's home defeat by Lorient on Sunday, in which Messi played the full 90 minutes. Messi will not train or play for PSG during the period of his suspension. It is understood the 35-year-old asked permission to make the journey to carry out commercial work but was refused. Messi, who has also been fined by the club, has a role as a tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia. The World Cup winner's two-year contract with PSG expires this summer Barcelona vice-president Rafael Yuste claimed in March that the Spanish club was in contact with Messi about a return to the Nou Camp. Messi has scored 31 goals and contributed 34 assists in 71 games in all competitions for PSG, and won the Ligue 1 title last season. He is set to miss matches against Troyes and Ajaccio as PSG, five points clear with five game...

Liverpool manager should receive touchline ban, says Chris Sutton

Image
According to Chris Sutton, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp should be handed a touchline ban for his behavior during Sunday's match against Tottenham. Klopp was shown a yellow card for running towards the fourth official and celebrating Liverpool's 94th-minute winner in the 4-3 victory at Anfield. "For the way he acted on the touchline, he should be banned from the technical area," Sutton said. "I don't think a fine is enough. He's got previous." The Liverpool boss, who injured himself in running towards fourth official John Brooks, later said the way referee Paul Tierney spoke to him when he received his booking was "not OK". But the referees' body the PGMOL said it "strongly refutes" Klopp's suggestions that Tierney's actions were "improper". Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club, Sutton added: "It's a big deal. There will have been coaches and kids watching and thinking it's OK to...

Antonio Conte: Tottenham manager leaves job my mutual consent

Image
Manager Antonio Conte has left Tottenham Hotspur by mutual consent after 16 months in charge. Conte called the Spurs players "selfish" and criticised the club's culture in a remarkable news conference after their recent draw at Southampton. Tottenham are fourth in the top flight but are out of all cup competitions. Conte's assistant Cristian Stellini will step up as head coach for the rest of the season, with former midfielder Ryan Mason his deputy. "We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place," chairman Daniel Levy said. "We all need to pull together. Everyone has to step up to ensure the highest possible finish for our club and amazing, loyal supporters." 'I see selfish players' - Conte furious after what proves to be his final game with Spurs His departure means Spurs are searching for their fourth permanent manager in four years since Mauricio Pochettino left in 2019. They su...

PSG's Unbeaten run of home games ended by Rennes

Image
Paris St-Germain fell to their first Ligue 1 home defeat since April 2021 as Rennes completed a league double over the runaway leaders. The visitors scored either side of half-time with Karl Toko Ekambi firing them in front before Arnaud Kalimuendo added a second three minutes after the break. PSG saw their unbeaten league run at the Parc des Princes end at 35 games. Reims also saw their 19-match unbeaten run stopped by a defeat to Marseille. They had last lost a league match in September in a 3-0 loss to Monaco. Reims, managed by Belgian-born Englishman Will Still, took the lead through Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun in the 13th minute. But two first-half goals from Alexis Sanchez gave Marseille a 2-1 win with Balogun striking the post in second-half injury time. Christophe Galtier's PSG side is seven points clear of Marseille at the top of the table as they head towards an 11th title in 13 years. Meanwhile, Rennes - who are just the third side to get the double over Paris St-Germ...

Liverpool: Stefan Bajcetic is out for the season with a thigh injury

Image
Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic will miss the rest of the season because of a thigh injury. The 18-year-old Spaniard has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Anfield, making 19 appearances and scoring his first senior goal at Aston Villa in December. He suffered an adductor problem in training and was ruled out of Wednesday's Champions League defeat by Real Madrid. "It's very sad to say goodbye to this amazing season for me," Bajcetic said. "But I understand this is part of football and will only make me stronger physically and mentally. "I would also like to say thank you to you Reds for all the support through the season and I assure you I will do my best to be back stronger than ever."

Chris Sutton: Tottenham manager should leave the club immediately, if he doesnt want to commit his future to spurs

Image
Tottenham manager Antonio Conte should leave the club immediately if he does not want to commit his future to Spurs, says ex-Blackburn striker Chris Sutton. Conte, 53, is out of contract at the end of the season, with Spurs out of all the cup competitions. They are fourth in the Premier League - the last of the qualifying places for the Champions League. "It's better for all concerned if he goes now," said Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club. "I think he will see the season out, but I'm just really confused what is going on at Spurs at this moment. "Antonio Conte really needs to commit one way or the other and if he says 'I'm here and happy to sign for another year or two' then Tottenham can move on but it doesn't look like he will. "Therefore if Tottenham want to progress, they are better off making a change now. "They have regressed from last season, they have been massively inconsistent." Conte guided Chelsea ...

Manchester City: Pep Guardiola says his time at club 'will be judged' on European success

Image
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says his reign will "absolutely" be judged on whether he leads the club to a first Champions League title, although he "doesn't agree" with it. City have won nine major trophies since Guardiola took charge in 2016. But he was asked whether his spell will be defined by success in Europe's premier cup competition. "It doesn't mean I agree with it but, absolutely, I'll be judged on that," said the 52-year-old Spaniard. "Before my first game in the Champions League [with City], people said I was here to win it. "I said 'what?' I don't know, but I accept it. As much as I go through, it's not going to change." City will secure a place in this season's quarter-finals if they win their last-16 second leg at home to RB Leipzig on Tuesday. The closest they have come to Champions League glory was when they reached the 2021 final, where they lost 1-0 to Chelsea. A late fightback b...

Salah loses penalty as Bournemouth records a win against the reds

Image
Mohamed Salah's glaring penalty miss helped Bournemouth climb out of the relegation zone after an excellent win which damaged Liverpool's chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League. The Reds were brought back down to earth after last week's 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United as the Cherries, who started the weekend bottom, did their survival chances a power of good. Liverpool was punished for poor defending when the unmarked Philip Billing struck from eight yards for his sixth Premier League goal of the season after fine work by Dango Ouattara. Virgil van Dijk had a header cleared off the line at 0-0 and substitute Diogo Jota was denied by Neto's fine save before Liverpool won a penalty when Adam Smith handled the Portugal forward's header. But Salah, who became Liverpool's all-time top Premier League scorer with 129 goals last week, blazed the penalty wide much to the delight of Bournemouth's fans. While the win ensured Bournemouth finishe...

Ken Sema: Watford midfielder says his stammer doesn't define him in his latest interview

Image
A quick interview with Watford's media team after he scored two goals in a 3-2 win over West Brom - nothing out of the ordinary there, a routine part of a footballer's post-match duties. But that brief chat posted on Twitter, a one-minute 41-second exchange about his return from injury and goal technique, blew up. His stammer had caught the attention of millions. He just thought he'd had a good game. "For the video to become so big, it was amazing because there was so much love, so many big names like 'role model', 'inspiration' - that I'd helped so many kids or adults who also have a stammer," midfielder Sema told BBC Breakfast. The 29-year-old has made more than 100 appearances for the Hornets since joining from Ostersunds FK in 2018, nearly five years in which he has conducted countless interviews. Yet this one was different and has, at the time of writing, racked up more than 11.5m views on Watford's Twitter account alone, and millions ...

Wout Weghorst: Man Utd forward admits to touching Anfield sign just 'to wind up Virgil van Dijk'

Image
Wout Weghorst says his dedication to Manchester United "can never be questioned" after he touched the 'This is Anfield' sign prior to his side's 7-0 thrashing by Liverpool on Sunday. Forward Weghorst said his intention had been to "wind up" Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk in the tunnel. "From the national team I know that Virgil always touches the sign," said Weghorst, who is on loan from Burnley. "The only intention I had was to stop him touching it and wind him up." It is rare for opposition players to touch the iconic sign, not least those of Liverpool's closest rivals Manchester United. Weghorst, filmed reaching for the sign at the same time as Liverpool defender Van Dijk, has received criticism on social media. Seeking to clarify the footage, Weghorst said on Instagram: "Normally I never react to media topics, but for this one it's worth it because you amazing Manchester United fans are important to me. "As ...

Uefa to reimburse Liverpool fans who had tickets for the 2022 Champions League final

Image
Uefa will refund Liverpool fans who had tickets for the 2022 Champions League final in Paris. It follows a recent independent report that found Uefa bears "primary responsibility" for the chaotic scenes before the game against Real Madrid. Fans were penned in and sprayed with tear gas outside Paris' Stade de France as kick-off was delayed by 36 minutes. Uefa said the refund scheme "covers all of the Liverpool FC ticket allocations for the final, i.e. 19,618 tickets". "We have taken into account a huge number of views expressed both publicly and privately and we believe we have devised a scheme that is comprehensive and fair," said Uefa general secretary Theodore Theodoridis. "We value the input from the Liverpool FC supporter organizations Spirit of Shankly and Liverpool Disabled Supporters Association as well as the open and transparent dialogue throughout this period. "We recognize the negative experiences of those supporters on the day and...

Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton fined £29k for drink-driving

Image
Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton has been banned from the road and fined £29,000 after admitting drink-driving. Police arrested the Brazilian player after pulling over his 2022-plate Mercedes G-Wagen in Ponteland Road, Newcastle, at 01:20 GMT on 12 January. A breath test showed the 26-year-old had 43 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath, above the legal limit of 35. Sitting at Newcastle Magistrates' Court, district judge Paul Currer gave him a 12-month driving ban. This will be reduced to nine months if Joelinton completes a rehabilitation course. The judge calculated the fine based on documents showing the footballer's weekly wage was £43,000 and said he must also pay a £2,000 surcharge and £85 costs. He said he took Joelinton's early guilty plea and compliance with officers into account and was convinced of his remorse. "You placed yourself in real jeopardy and it could have had disastrous consequences for the lives of others," he told the player. ...

Cristiano Ronaldo: Portugal forward makes competitive debut in Al Nassr win

Image
Cristiano Ronaldo made his competitive debut for new club Al Nassr in their 1-0 win over Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League on Sunday. The 37-year-old Portugal forward joined the club last month on a deal that runs until 2025, reportedly earning more than £177m per year. He led the line and played the entire game in which Brazilian midfielder Talisca scored the winner. Al Nassr is top of the Saudi league, a point above second-placed Al Hilal. Ronaldo - who has played for Manchester United, Juventus, and Real Madrid - was greeted by banners and cheers from his adoring fans at King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh. It comes after he scored twice in Riyadh All-Star XI's 5-4 defeat by Lionel Messi's Paris St-Germain in an exhibition match on Thursday.

West Ham in talks with Aston Villa Danny Ings

Image
West Ham have made a move to sign Aston Villa striker Danny Ings. Only Wolves have scored fewer than West Ham's 15 goals this season and manager David Moyes is desperate to bring in someone to solve his side's goalscoring problems to propel them up the league. The Hammers are now in talks for Ings, whose present deal at Villa expires in 2024, with a £12m fee being discussed. The 30-year-old, who has won three England caps, has scored seven times in 21 appearances so far this season. His six goals in the Premier League are one more than West Ham's main two forwards, Michail Antonio and £30.5m summer signing Gianluca Scamacca have managed between them this term. Antonio and Scamacca both scored in a 3-1 win over Fulham on 9 October, but since then they have notched one more goal each, with West Ham having won only once in the league and slipping into the relegation zone. Aside from an injury-marred spell at Liverpool, Ings has a consistent top-flight scoring record, averaging...

Gavi runs riot over real Madrid in super cup win

Image
Xavi claimed his first trophy as Barcelona manager after a comfortable victory over rivals Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final. The La Liga leaders dominated the match in Saudi Arabia and took the lead when 18-year-old Gavi fired in from Robert Lewandowski's pass. Lewandowski struck just before halftime when he finished from Gavi's pass. Gavi got another assist in the second half as he set up Pedri before Karim Benzema struck a late consolation. The Frenchman's late goal was scant consolation for Real Madrid, who were a distant second-best throughout. Indeed, Thibaut Courtois prevented Barcelona from winning by an even bigger margin with a couple of smart saves. The former Chelsea goalkeeper was tested early when he turned Lewandowski's sweeping effort onto the post and he also kept out Ousmane Dembele's powerful strike. But after Pedri got his side's third midway through the second half with a tap-in there was never any doubt about the result as Barcelon...

Manchester United agree on Wout Weghorst loan deal

Image
Manchester United has agreed on a deal to sign Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst on loan for the rest of the season. The 30-year-old Burnley forward spent the first half of the season at Besiktas but is now heading to Manchester for a medical before the move can be completed. A deal has been reached for his loan at the Turkish club to be terminated. Weghorst scored eight goals and registered four assists in 16 league games for Besiktas. His latest goal came in a 2-1 win against Kasimpasa on 7 January and, following that match, he appeared to wave goodbye to Besiktas' fans. The move allows United manager Erik ten Hag to bring in his fellow Dutchman to fill the vacancy he has for a striker in his squad. Weghorst also scored two late goals for the Netherlands in their World Cup quarter-final with Argentina last month. He also scored in the penalty shoot-out, which Argentina went on to win. The 30-year-old scored two goals in 20 appearances for Burnley following his £12m arrival from ...
